This was an experiment in social signaling and wearable artifacts, as part of a conversation about identifying other members of your cohort in public settings. It's easy to add to any clothing item, from the collar shown here to a dress strap to the collar of a t-shirt.

The clip device has 4 independently controlled LEDs for subtle pattern-based communication, a tiny battery hidden on the backside, and the potential to add Bluetooth. It was also an exploration in embedding electronics inside composite materials; the LEDs, resistors, wires, and magnets and sandwiched between layers of fiberglass to protect them, provide structure, and even make them waterproof.

I've always enjoyed photography with real strobes, but the constraint of being in a fixed location to have the real experience is limiting. I built these to bring the power of multi-flash and instant review on a large screen to street photography, and add in the flexibility of easily moved lights.

There are two speedlights attached to umbrellas, along with wooden handles. One of the umbrellas also has a Sony laser projector attached to the shaft. After a photo is taken, the image shows up on the umbrella itself! The instant review helps build rapport and confidence with subjects.

Everything is wireless, runs on batteries, and packs down into a small messenger bag.
